Tummy Tucks - Get Rid of That Apron!

Are you sick and tired of looking in the mirror and seeing that apron of loose skin and sagging tissue hanging off your midsection? Are you discouraged that no matter how much weight you lose and how diligent your exercise routine, the efforts don't seem to pay off like they should? The good news? Not only is that "excess baggage" not your fault, but you can actually do something about it. The tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is a procedure that not only gets rid of the excess skin and tissue, but also actually tightens and firms the abdominal muscles. This translates into a slimmer, firmer midsection you'll be proud to look at - and to show off!

Mini or Full?
Tummy tucks comes in two versions: mini (sometimes called "partial") or full. Depending on what you want and what Dr. Barber recommends, one of these surgeries is sure to be the answer to your belly flab problem. You may also want to ask about the tummy tuck in conjunction with liposuction or as part of a lower body lift. Abdominoplasties take from one to five hours, on average, and can give you that tighter, leaner look you've been striving for.

Call Dr. Barber's office today or visit our site's contact form, fill it out and look for our confidential reply to any questions you might have about the tummy tuck procedure. We'll also be happy to schedule an appointment for you to come in and discuss with Dr. Barber what abdominoplasty can do for you.

Skin Care and Smoking

Of all the things we do to damage our skin and to thwart the benefits of any skincare treatments, smoking is right at the top of the list. We all have our vices, but if there's any way to possibly stop this one, both you and your cosmetic surgery will benefit greatly.

People know the dangers of smoking with regard to cancer, emphysema and all the other major health risks. But smoking also adversely affects us in ways that don't kill us, such as with our skin. Smoking narrows blood vessels in the top layers of the skin. Because blood flow is impaired, oxygen and nutrients like Vitamin A become depleted. Collagen and elastin fibers - which give the skin its firmness and elasticity - are also damaged, causing premature sagging and wrinkling. Repeated squinting of the eyes, pursing of the lips, and the heat given off by cigarettes when we puff on them also factor in the wrinkling equation.

Not only does cigarette smoking cause skin damage to the face, other parts of the body, such as the upper arms, are affected as well. This damage occurs in people who have smoked for as little as a few years.

Although cosmetic procedures such as Botox, Restylane and collagen injections can help alleviate the wrinkling effects of smoking, these procedures do not work as well, nor do they last as long when patients are smokers.

If you smoke, quit. If you are thinking about smoking, don't. Please call our office to set up an appointment with Dr. Barber to learn more or to discuss how smoking affects your skin. You may also fill out our Web site's contact form if you have any questions or comments about skin care and smoking.

As with most things, the pendulum of knowledge swings. You may have heard or read recent news regarding the benefits of sun exposure ? after years of doctors warning people to avoid the sun or reap the consequences of ultraviolet rays. These consequences range from cosmetic nuisances like wrinkling to truly scary conditions like melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer. Fortunately, many of the cosmetic effects of skin damage may be reversed with treatments such as Botox, Restylane and collagen injections.

Harvard Department of Dermatology Chair Robert Stern advises us to take a commonsense approach to the sun: Don?t avoid it altogether. Enjoy the sun, reap its benefits, but do so with care.

Studies have shown that many of us have low levels of Vitamin D, which can be linked to such problems as reduced bone health. As little as 15 minutes of sunlight, however, supplies us with a full day?s requirement of that vitamin. Sunshine can also chase away the blues, sometimes manifested as seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Getting out on a sunshiny day to garden, take a walk or other types of physical activities helps keep us in shape and our weight in check, as well.

The key to enjoying the sun lies in using our knowledge of its hazards and its benefits to our best interests. Do use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or more when you anticipate being out in the sun for an extended period of time. Do wear a hat and keep your body covered in lightweight clothing during the middle of the day when the sun?s rays are the strongest and most damaging. But don?t completely avoid the sun. It?s not only fun, it?s good for you, too!

If you need more answers about skin care and the sun, contact our office via this Web site?s contact form. Please give us a call if you?d like to talk directly to Dr. Barber, and we?ll schedule an appointment for you at your convenience.
