Breast Implant Placement
You also have several different options for the placement of your breast implant, each with its unique benefits. As a general rule, the deeper inside the body the implant is placed, the more natural the appearance will be. For some women with naturally small breasts and thin frames, a deeper implant is recommended, to prevent the implants from leaving visible outlines.
Options for placement of breast implants include:
- Subglandular. Subglandular placement is directly beneath the mammary glands, and above the muscular structure of the breast. This type of placement involves the shortest healing times, but in some women, it may result in a palpable implant outline, meaning that the shape of the implant can be felt and/or seen.
- Partial submuscular. Partial submuscular, or subpectoral, implant placement is directly beneath the pectoral muscle, but above atop the underlying muscles of the chest. This option can be an excellent choice for those who are concerned about the possibility of palpable implants, but who would like to minimize their recovery time as much as possible.
- Complete submuscular. Complete or fully submuscular implants are placed beneath both the pectoral muscle and the underlying muscles of the chest. This option is ideal for many women who have naturally small breasts, and it has the added benefit of allowing easier reading of mammograms than other breast implant placements. This type of placement also requires the longest healing time.
