Breast Implant Type
Modern breast implants are available in a variety of materials, constructions, shapes, and sizes.
Implants can be filled with either a sterile saline solution or a silicone gel. Silicone implants were reapproved by the FDA in 2006. Discuss with Dr. Barber which implant type is right for you.
A saline implant consists of an outer shell, also called a lumen, which is filled during the procedure.
Your options for implant type include:
- Either teardrop or round-shaped breast implants, depending on your preferences and body type.
- Either textured or smooth outer material. Textured material is preferred by some who believe it helps the implant remain anchored.
- Either filled with a fixed volume of saline during surgery; or filled through a valve, allowing for adjustments during or for a period of about six months following the procedure.
