The popularity of injectable fillers is on the rise in the United States. Products like Juvéderm ®, Restylane ®, Perlane®, and others are competing with collagen as the filler of choice. Dr. James Barber can help you decide which type of filler best suits your needs.
Injectable fillers are used to increase the volume of skin at the dermal layer, which helps reduce wrinkles and excessive folds, primarily around the nose and mouth. Fillers are also used extensively for lip augmentation.
Juvéderm ® is one of the newest injectable fillers available on the market today. It is made up mostly of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance in the skin and connective tissue of mammals.
Uses for Injectable Fillers
- To fill smile lines
- Lip augmentation
- To fill hollow places underneath facial scars
One of the chief functions of hyaluronic acid is to maintain hydration and skin volume making it ideal for facial tissue augmentation. When injected, Juvéderm® bonds with water in the skin, and can increase its weight in water over 1000 times. This volume helps expand the skin and stretch out wrinkles.
An additional benefit of Juvéderm® is its ability to stimulate collagen production in the skin where it is injected. Studies show that the expansion of the gel stretches cells called fibroblast, as these cells expand; additional collagen is released, creating more elastic and youthful looking skin.
Application
Using a very small needle, Dr. Barber injects Juvéderm ® in the subdermal layer of the skin where the wrinkles appear. The amount of filler used depends on the severity of the wrinkle.
Many doctors prefer Juvéderm ® to other fillers because it seems to be slightly less viscous, or thick, and is easier to inject than other products.
Recovery time is virtually nil and you can go about your business immediately after injection. The filler will eventually be absorbed by the body, but the skin tightening effects of Juvéderm ® can last up to six months before a re-injection is indicated.
When deciding on the proper cosmetic procedure to reduce wrinkles, it is important to find a reputable surgeon who is part of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Pittsburgh plastic surgeon, Dr. James Barber is board certified and is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
