Tumescent / Ultrasonic
Liposuction is an excellent and effective option for patients who are generally healthy and fit, and yet have small areas of fat that have been resistant to diet and exercise.
For patients such as these, liposuction is often a solution that helps them maintain their ideal physique and correct their proportions, often providing them with incentive and even a reward for maintaining their healthy lifestyle.
Many patients, for example, have stubborn pouches of fat in their abdomens or their hips and thighs, despite being otherwise well-proportioned, fit, and healthy.
Liposuction and Weight Loss
While not an effective weight loss technique on its own, sometimes a liposuction procedure is just what you need to put the finishing touches on your almost perfect new physique.
There are two basic liposuction procedures being performed today: Tumescent liposuction; and ultrasonic, or ultrasound assisted liposuction.
Tumescent liposuction
Tumescent liposuction is a relatively simple procedure.
In preparation for a tumescent liposuction, the pocket of fat to be removed will be injected subcutaneously with a sterile solution that will work to both anesthetize the area and to cause it to become somewhat hardened, creating a clear delineation of the area.
Once the injected solution has taken effect, the doctor will insert a thin metal tube called a cannula, through which the targeted fat will be removed.
Ultrasonic liposuction
Ultrasonic liposuction works much the same way as traditional liposuction, except that the cannula, or tube through which the fat is removed, emits an ultrasound signal that causes the targeted areas of fat to loosen, making them easier to remove.
