Tumescent Liposuction
Serving Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the U.S. Dr. James Barber offers multiple options for liposuction treatment, including tumescent liposuction.
The fatty area is injected with a large volume of fluid to expand and anesthetize the treatment area. The amount of fluid is usually 3 to 4 times the volume of fat to be removed. The fluid expands the space between the fat cells and allows for efficient suction of fatty materials.
After the solution is injected, Dr. Barber inserts a small tube called a cannula through one or more incisions in the skin; the fat cells are then vacuumed out.
Areas that are treatable with liposuction:
- Face
- Thighs
- Abdomen
- Arms
- Neck
- Buttocks
Liposuction helps sculpt the body into a more aesthetic form by modeling the persistent fatty deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. Less than 10 pounds of fat can safely be removed during a liposuction session, but that weight can make all the difference for your appearance.
Good candidates
The best candidates for liposuction are:
- Adults who are in general good health
- Non-smokers
- Men and women who are at a good weight, but need a little help with body shaping
After liposuction, the skin may become loose and baggy and may require additional surgery such as a facelift or abdominoplasty. These options should be discussed fully with Dr. Barber during the initial consultation.
Complications
Like all surgical procedures, liposuction at the Pittsburgh clinic can cause complications such as:
- Skin necrosis (dead skin)
- Fluid imbalance
- Lidocaine toxicity
- Thromboembolism
Liposuction is not a magical cure, and it is not intended for weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure that should be considered carefully for body sculpting.
When deciding on liposuction to improve the shaping and contouring of your body, it is important to find a reputable surgeon who is part of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Pittsburgh plastic surgeon James Barber is board certified and is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
